Tees Active has partnered with Stockton Libraries to deliver an innovative initiative supporting 2026 as the Year of Reading, bringing digital library services directly into local leisure facilities.
Through the Active Minds Active Bodies project, Stockton Library staff will be based in Tees Active Activ8 gyms at Billingham Forum, Splash, IB Leisure and Thornaby Pavilion. The initiative aims to make reading more accessible by connecting physical activity with free digital learning resources.
Customers will have the opportunity to join Stockton Libraries and receive guidance on downloading the Libby and PressReader apps. These platforms provide access to a wide range of audiobooks, digital newspapers and magazines, allowing members to listen while exercising or read during post-workout rest time.
Councillor Nigel Cooke, Stockton Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Culture, said:
“As 2026 is the Year of Reading, it is encouraging to see Stockton Libraries adopting innovative approaches to engage with residents. This partnership with Tees Active introduces library services in a new and accessible environment while promoting the breadth of resources available to our communities.”
Allan McDermott, Community Engagement Manager at Tees Active, said:
“We are excited to pilot this project and bring library services directly to our customers and staff. The response from Activ8 teams has been extremely positive, and they will actively promote the service.”
